Gullfoss

Day 9 – September 7, 2016

This was my favorite foss of them all! A little slice of beauty. Once you park, you follow a misty path along the cliff outlining the surging river below.  The path leads you to a POWERFUL force of nature. We climbed up some slippery rocks to get a closer look at the top of the waterfall. The sound is incredible – it is a deafening roar. Some brave hikers ventured off the path toward parts cliffs that were closer to the river.

You can take a separate path up some stairs that gives you a broader view of the river and waterfall. Here there was ample signage which described the history of this waterfall, which was very controversial (they wanted to use it to generate power). There were also pictures of the area in winter, which looks surreal.
